Project – FOMC headstone repair – 2022

Over the past 12 years, FoMC has cleaned all the stones in all of
Middleborough’s Town Entrusted and Town Owned Cemeteries. Some
stones have been straightened and some stones that have fallen over have
been set upright. Many of these cemeteries have stones that are broken,
no longer on their bases, or have been buried completely. In keeping with
the purpose of Friends of Middleborough Cemeteries to preserve,
maintain, and restore cemeteries located in Middleborough, our focus now
is on the restoration of stones that are broken, delaminated, cracked or
unstable. Proper restoration of these stones requires experience and
proper equipment. Our volunteers are not trained in the extensive work
that goes into the repair and restoration of many of these stones nor do we
have the equipment required. Our Preservation team has documented
approximately 85 stones which need to be repaired.

To that end, it is our goal to employ a reputable company to work with
our preservation team one cemetery at a time to save the existing
headstones. By employing such a company, we will have the benefit of
licensed engineers and OSHA certified workers who are trained in the
proper use of the equipment needed as well as supply all products
necessary. The end result will be stones that will withstand the weather
and last for many more years. Each cemetery will have a book
documenting the work done by the company including before and after
pictures.
